After doing a little more research... The user guides/manuals may have information on the ambient temperature the freezer can operate in. You'll usually find two ranges: (1) 32 degrees F to 100 degrees F, and (2) 0 degrees F to 110 degrees F. The 0 - 110F is the range for the freezers indicated as "garage-ready". If that information is not in the manual, ask the store before you buy.

The previous one we had lasted for 5 years and was in the garage the entire time. But we live in California and so far have not had below-freezing temperatures. That might make a difference.
