Extending the lines is possible, but I would recommend finding a way to insulate them from the opening in the top to where you'll be placing the tower. The draft tower has four screws that attach the tower to a plastic bracket that attaches the tower to the top of the fridge, it would be possible to remove that bracket and use the screw holes to mount the draft tower securely. But then you'll be left with exposed hoses (warm beer...) and a hole in the top of the kegerator that will need to be covered as well. As far as the placement of the opening, it is roughly 6 inches from the rear of the unit if I recall correctly. It is definitely placed closer to the rear than the front.
