“Does the door handle slam and rest on the counter top when opening? Or did I get a dud? Every other toaster oven I've seen the door will only open so far as to not quite hit the counter top.”

It slams and uses the countertop as the door stop. Good news is that if you use it early in the morning it certainly wakes you up with the noise. However, with that one negative we like everything else about ours.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.If you open the door reasonably carefully, it doesn't slam, at least mine doesn't. The handle does rest on the countertop, which I think is a feature, as it makes the door a stable surface when removing or repositioning food in the oven. Good luck, and Happy New Year!
