• Honestly, they probably used cheaper non-Energy Star components to keep the price down. It will be just as reliable but not as efficient and use more power and put out more waste heat.

• Not completely sure why this TV uses more power, but would guess that this TV's backlighting contains more LEDs than other models which may be edge-lit. More LEDs = more power consumption and also more heat. Although it would probably not add more than $1 or $2 per month to your electric bill.
