Battery life will vary mainly with (a) display brightness setting, (b) apps running in background and amount of time spent accessing the internet for streaming, data retrieval, etc. I use mine 4-6 times a day for an hour or half hour at a time and it lasts 2-3 days. Under continuous use, it should last at least a day for reading. There are power saving settings you can apply to extend the battery life.

My 9 yr old used it for 1-2 hours on full charge just to play app games and the battery goes down QUICK. Plus the back of it gets warm as if you are running a speed test or something. I just returned it to the store yesterday for refund and will be buying her something better. It also shut down and restarted itself 3 times since she has had it for Christmas. I'd say to even go with a Kindle or Samsung tablet if you can.
