You should use the house internet, because will not limited you from using any where in the world. About the garage door as long you can get wifi signal in the garage for the switch you can use your phone from anywhere and the door will not interfere.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I don't have an iPhone, but I am currently controlling my devices in Las Vegas from Utah. So I think the answer is the device works directly from your iPhone as long as your iPhone is connected to the internet - router or cell data.
