I bought 4 of these switches along with 4 smart plugs almost 4 weeks ago. Installation and setup via the android app was difficult, but not impossible, requiring multiple attempts to get things running. Everything was running well, including integration with Alexa, up until this weekend, where it appeared that everything went offline at once. After numerous unsuccessful attempts to reconnect all my devices, I finally broke down and called support. They informed me that the servers were partially down for maintenance and once they were back up later that evening, I would be able to "fully enjoy all the features of my devices". Well quite frankly, I find this unacceptable. First of all, if insignia planned to take down their servers for maintenance, why not have the courtesy send a push notification via the app to inform your customers of the potential for inconvenience? As of this writing, the servers are still not back up, and I still have no connectivity of my devices. I have proceeded to begin swapping them out for Zigbee based devices which require no external server to function. This is somewhat expensive, but I believe that in the long run it will be worth it to not be dependent upon an outside server, or the manufacturers commitment to support the product properly. Bottom line; these are inexpensive devices that work well, when they work. If you can tolerate outages due to unexpected server maintenance and outages, they may be suitable for your needs. However, due to Best Buys sketchy commitment to supporting these devices properly so that they always work, I would strongly recommend investing in Zigbee based solutions that while initially more expensive, will certainly pay for themselves in reduced frustration down the road. You get what you pay for.

      Hardware Good Software Bad

For context, I'm writing this review after 3 days of trying to get this device to work correctly. I first got myself into the Insignia Connect ecosystem with an Insignia Smart Outlet, and it was a small pain to set up but after a few tries the app eventually worked and set it up, and I was hoping that it would be a similar story with these two smart switches I bought. They look great. The hardware in these things are everything I could want (Dimmer would be nice). But the software controlling everything is is terrible. The latest app update for Android makes the app look a ton better but it still fails to connect to the switch and configure it most of the time. Most of the time it doesn't connect at all, but on the off chance it does let me type in my wifi information I just get "Registration Error - The registration cal failed. Please reset your device and try again later" As I said, I've been doing this for the past three days. I've done so many factory resets with that reset button below the main button. I've reset the breaker so many times. I've put a pin into the reset button off to the bottom left of the main button (under the faceplate) I've even removed my wifi password temporarily trying to get it to work that way. I've tried using a completely different device to set it up. Nothing has worked. My other android devices all have the same Registration Error, and if I tried to configure it on my laptop it let me connect it to my Wifi but it it didn't give me any option to link the switch to my bestbuy account to control it from the app. My one star review is for this is solely for how impossible this thing is to set up. Once it's set up and working if you can get that far these are great easy to use (with a Google Home) additions to a smarthome ecosystem. If you've got the patience to do the diagnostic hoops, if you're tech savy enough to get it set up, the use of the device is great. If you're not, pay for the Geek Squad installation so it's their headache to get it working.

        InsigniaCustomerSupport

        Hello ImAGeekThis,

Thank you for purchasing our Insignia Smart In-Wall Light Switch, and for your patience in trying to set it up over three days. We certainly take our customers feedback into consideration, that is why we are continuously working on App updates and have just released version 3.1.0 of the Insignia Connect app already available on Google PlayStore and Apple App Store.

We believe this new version will resolve the Switch on-boarding problems you experienced. Please be so kind to update your Insignia Connect app to this version, then follow these steps to factory reset your Switch and try the Setup process again.

To factory reset the wall switch press and hold the reset button for at least 15 sec. The relay inside clicks twice, once at 10 seconds and once again at 15 seconds. At this point, you should be able to on-board your Switch and use it with the Insignia Connect app. Thank you again.

I recently purchased 5 of these to complete my amazon alexa/homekit smart home. I can say that I bought these thinking that i would be returning them, based on the early reviews. Well they are not going back! If you know how to install a light switch then thats really the only frustrating part, as i installed 4 of these in one 4-switch wall box. Downloading the app to get the switches working with your phone or voice assistant was a breeze. You download the app and sign into your best buy account. Then you need to add a device. It took about 3 minutes of waiting while it set up the first one, but after that I may have spent all of 30 seconds getting each of the others set up in the app and registered with apple's homekit. To get them to seamlessly tie in with Alexa, you, need to enable the skill insignia connect within the Alexa app. Simply sign in to your same best buy account you used to set up the switches in the first place and done. It took my echos about 5 minutes to register the new devices and I was good to go. The best thing for me about these is they do not require a hub to be plugged into my router. I have enough stuff plugged in already. With all of that being said... I'm not sure what everyone else is doing to make these not work. I have yet to encounter a time where i tried to turn the light(s) on with my phone or voice and it not worked. I have experienced a short 5-7 second delay from time to time, but that is uncommon.

Awful- unable to connect to Wifi

I purchased one of these smart wall switches in order to automate the timing of front yard light on our lamppost using the Apple Home Kit. The wiring of the switch in the electrical box was very easy. However, after powering up, I could not connect the device to my Wifi. It kept blinking green and clicking, but would not connect to the Insignia connect App. The reset button did not seem to work, nor did all the other online troubleshooting suggestions I tried (restarting router, making sure router has WPA security, paperclip to reset button, etc). The wifi has a very strong signal throughout my home and in the location where the switch was installed, so that cannot be the issue. I know that these switches do not work for objects controlled by more than one switch (i.e. 3-way), but this was not the case for this switch-- single light switch is the only way to control the lamp post. I was so frustrated that I returned the device to Best Buy. At first, the store manager would not let me return it because he said it was damaged. I had to convince him the device was defective, and he finally agreed to let me replace it with the same product (despite my hesitation to get the same product). Unfortunately, the exact same thing happened with the new switch. I verified that all the wiring was correct (confirmed the load and line wires with a power detector). The device simply blinked green and failed to connect to the Insignia connect app or the Apple Home Kit app. I ended up removing the switch and will return this product. Very frustrating- spent hours working on this yesterday. The Insignia connect app has a link for troubleshooting but the page would not open. I read online that a lot of people have had challenges with connecting this device to Wifi. I will go with another brand that is better rated in this regard.

OK - So this switch (once it is properly set up) works perfectly. I have it hooked up to Alexa and it works flawlessly in one of my kids (that cant remember to turn off the light) room. Physical install is as simple as hard wiring any light switch. If you can screw wire nuts together, you can do this. The issue is when you have to set it up via the app. I have an iphone so this is only my experience from the lens of an ios user. The app is very primitive - it is clown like in nature - I will tell you what I did that finally worked. When you get into the app, its going to ask you to sign into your BBY Account - do it...I skipped this thinking it wouldnt matter and it wouldnt let me add my "home" as a location. Once signed in, that was one less issue. Next, it will ask you for permission to link your Apple Home/ Keychain - I scoffed at this as that is none of their business - I found out later that by NOT doing this, it simply will NOT find your device. I dont know why, it makes no sense, but the instant that I gave it permission, BAM it found the switch. Lastly, you need to make sure that your phone that you are using to set it up is on the same network (and, if you have a wireless mesh system with multiple points) you need to make sure that the phone and the switch are on 2.4Ghz and on the same access point. If you want to connect it to your Amazon echo you simply go into the app and search for insignia under skills - link the account (you will need to use the sign on you created in step one for your BBY Account) to Alexa and then you are ready to go! Hope this helps - The instructions are garbage - the app is garbage - the switch is great.

      Good, but can be difficult

After some difficulty I got my three switches working and connected to my Google Mini. It's important to realize the difference between these what switches and plain household switches. Plain switches don't require power, they simply connect/interrupt one leg of the power going to the light. The smart switch needs both legs to power it. Usually that means connecting a white wire that wasn't connected to your plain switch. No problem. But the plain switch has two, probably black, wires connected to it. The question is, which one goes to the load (light bulb) and which one comes from the power source. It may not be easy to tell. The plain switch doesn't care. Your smart does and so you have to know which wire guess to the light and which come from the power. You may have to flip a coin. I installed three smart switches. There is a tiny indicator light on the smart switch. If you picked the right wires to hook up to the load and power on the smart switch, it will light up. If not it will not. Two of the switches I installed did not light up. I switched the load and power wires and then they lit up. And then the three switches worked fine. Then I installed the Insignia Connect App on my Android phone. The smart switch has a reset hole at the lower left corner that takes a paper clip to operate. You may want to hold it down for 15 second to reset the switch. There is another switch on the bottom, in the middle, that you press in with you finger. This is used to pair the smart switch with the app. The app will prompt you to hold it down for about 15 second. In a few seconds, you will hear a click. Don't be fooled it's not ready yet. Wait for the second click, then tell the app to pair. This worked for me after a couple of tries. Once the Insignia Connect App recognizes your switch(es), your Google Home app should have no trouble finding them (At least mine did not.) Hopefully, Alexa is just as aminable. Hope this helps someone. I found the instructions with the switch difficult.

Product: Insignia™ - Wi-Fi Smart In-Wall Light Switch Model NS-CH1XIS8 One of my biggest fears when I purchased this switch was that the installation would be a pain and that after I finally got it installed I would learn that the switch is defective. WELL TO MY RELIEF, not only was the installation easy but the directions were very clear and informative. The directions explained what wires went where and how to hook them from your old switch to your new one. After I had the switch installed in the wall I had it hooked to my wifi in less than a minute and about a minute after that I had it linked to Amazon Alexa. Overall installation time was less than 10 minutes and I consider myself fairly slow and inexperienced at installing switches. I have only had it installed for a couple of days bust so far the switch has been working great. There is a small light on the switch that lets you know when it is in the on position. I have had no issues with lag when using Alexa. I can tell Alexa to turn on the back yard and about a second and a half later you can hear a very faint click from the switch and the light turns on in the back yard. My internet is through AT&T and I use the NETGEAR - Nighthawk AC1900 Dual-Band Wi-Fi router. I have multiple hubs, lights, tv's, and other devices on my wifi network and have had zero issues with my connection to this switch. The only con I have found so far is the switch does not appear to be compatible with IFTT . I believe this is due to it being independent and not syncing to a hub. This switch is great and works as described but If it could be made compatible with a hub like Phillips hue or Wink I believe it would dominate the smart switch market. Overall a very good device. I will update this review in the future if I have any issues with this product.

      Worked fantastic until today

Once installed works great until today. I have it setup on my kitchen light. I have it configured through Insignia Connect and I have it linked to my Google home and minis. Everything worked great. Until today. Now GH says there was an error and it can't control kitchen light. So I start all over. Delete it out of Connect, unlink it from GH and resetup everything from scratch. The Connect software is a nightmare. Sometimes it works but mostly doesn't. Once I finally get it setup in Connect, it doesn't turn the light on or off. Start over. Server connection error in Connect. Start over. Registration failure. Start over. Finally after 9 attempts. I get it back working in Connect. GH can't work it. Kitchen light is unavailable. The is an error and GH can't control kitchen light. Redo all the settings in GH.... Nothing. I just purchased 2 more today to see if I got a bum switch. It happens... Nope. Both other switches are having the same issue. That is about $100 in switches that don't work now. As of today...yesterday fine. Today zilch. I suspect a software issue between GH and insignia Connect. Connect is awful and needs to be fixed. I guess I will have to take back the switches and buy another brand. When they work, it is fantastic but nothing to indicate the problem and Connect is hard as heck to get the switches configured and working.
