A Wifi plug can be used to turn off and on any device that you would normally plug in to the wall. Lamps or heaters or even things like crock pots. I use mine with an amateur radio setup that has the ability to be controlled over the internet. Without this device i would have to leave the transceiver on all of the time to remote in to it. Now I use one of these to turn the power on to the transceiver before I remote in. Thus, i don't have to leave the transceiver on all of the time. I turn it on with one of these wifi plugs from wherever I am at that has internet service use the transceiver then turn the power off with the wifi plug until the next time I'm ready to use it. I wish I had this is college. I had a roommate that liked to turn the electric stove on in our apartment and would fall asleep. It would have been nice to have had an option to cut the power to it remotely.
