Yes you can leave it in the case.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No, the easiest way is to put the metal backing on the back of the otter box instead of the phone. To get it to stay put a little gorilla glue on the back of the metal plate that comes in the package with the mount and glue it to the outside of the rubber cover of the otter box. Hold it firmly for about 30 seconds then put the cover onto the otter box. It will stay on with no problems. If you already put it on the phone you can easily take it off and follow my instructions above. Works perfectly. Have this mount in 2 cars with 2 separate phones in otter boxes and works fine.
