No, the hub will work when plugged directly into your computer’s USB‑C port without an external power source. However, if you want to use the USB‑C Power Delivery feature to keep your laptop charged while the hub is connected, you’ll need to attach a compatible USB‑C power adapter to the hub’s PD port. Just make sure your computer model supports DisplayPort 1.4 version and DSC, including USB Power Delivery 2.0/3.0 over USB-C port.
