• The power source is not necessary for full functionality, only for heavy wattage devices such as external hard drives. It is bus-powered and therefore will work once connected to the computer.

• I have never tried to use this without power, I wouldn't recommend doing that just because the USB devices all draw power. So it being powered keeps drain on your machine down.
