There is a slight reduction to outside sound from the ear piece in your ear, but nothing actively blocking sound. Conversations are great and clear and you can watch your show with other people around and it is not different than watching it together. If you want silence on a plane, you will need to get a higher level pair ... like a 75e

The Elite 45e does not have Active Noise Cancellation or HearThrough, which is what you describe with outside noise adjustment.
