Yes. When map directions or text messages are read aloud, the music is temporarily muted. It picks right back up when the interruption is over.

Kind of like the iPhone - you can minimize maps to select your music and then pull up maps again by a small icon in the top right of corner of the screen. And if both maps and music are running and the maps screen is open you can pull up the music screen by touching the small music icon on the top right of the screen. If you have the music screen up while you have an active navigation going, CarPlay will mute your music as it continues to give you navigation directions but it won't pull up the navigation screen until you push the maps icon to switch it to the maps app.
