“Are the crystals embedded in the case or do they stick out from the surface?”

They stick out a little bit. It took a little while to get used to feeling them on the back of my phone

The rhinestones are firmly embedded, not glued to the surface, but they do protrude. Probably 1/2 mm or less.

The crystals are pretty much embedded into the case, but they still protrude slightly. When you place your phone down you can hear them scrape a bit... it's so pretty I don't mind it though... just have to be careful when putting it down on a surface.
