• Yes it is the plug in kind. To either a lighter or power port. And why wouldn't you?? If plugged in you do not have to worry about batteries running down.

• The source of power to the camera is by connecting it to the lighter. The way I understand you can set the camera are in 2 different ways. The easiest way (does not look clean but it works) is by just putting camera on windshield and connected to the lighter and cable hanging around, the second which probably requires instalation is when you run the cable thru the ceiling then drop by the door frame, behind globe compartment and then connected to the lighter. Your question about connecting it directly, that will be something you would need to ask a bestbuy technitian to see if they are willing to connect the camera some other way, but i woukd not recommend it.
