They recommend that you do not use powdered or liquid dishwasher detergent but it would be put in the main compartment with the door slid shut. Cascade tablets are recommended and I can tell the difference from the powder, and powder tablets. Some dishes may be left with a white residue after they are cleaned. I have switched to cascade pods because I notice how much better they clean the dishes.
