You could use them as surround speakers, but they're probably a little bigger than most, and highly-capable speakers. There's a smaller-sized Klipsch bookshelf (I forget the model number), that might be better-suited for surround speakers.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Actually one of the best questions I've seen asked anywhere. The short answer is...they absolutely can be used as surrounds...I am doing so in a 7.1 setup. The difference between the two is that surrounds like the r-14s diffuse the sound in multiple directions, thus making the direction the surround comes from less precise (intentionally, that is their purpose). These bookshelves will direct the sound forward where they are pointed. They will work just fine too. Difference....if you like to listen to music, you may prefer the bookshelves as the imaging is more precise directionally. If you mostly watch TV and movies, and sometimes listen to music then the surrounds may be superior. The design of surround in movies is specifically designed to be diffuse in the surround channels. Next time you go to a theater, look up in the upper left back and upper right back and notice they use multi-directional surrounds. BUT EITHER will work! Appearance is different too of course.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. They are a great sounding speaker I have them in my system but not as surround speakers. Since most surround speakers ( and the ones that I have) are dipole I would recommend that type of speaker I searched: Do surround speakers sound better if they are dipole on the internet and here was one link I came up with: https://audyssey.zendesk.com/entries/208239-Dipoles-bipoles-or-monopoles-for-surround-speakers-
