how far off wall for port to work? null

2 -3 inches off the wall should suffice. A good rule of thumb it the diameter of the firing port is the same distance off the wall.

Mine are about 2 inches from the wall and sound great.

Not much like 1inch to 1/2 an inch

two feet from the wall is ideal for this rear ported speakers.
