I also had same problem with the fan noise. It runs every time. I heard Lenovo homepage had provided Power Manager software for managing integrated hardware (e.g. Fan) for Thinkpad, but I failed to find appropriate program for Ideapad. So I have returned it.

This system has a standard mechanical hard drive and you will be able to hear the hard drive working. What you describe sounds normal.
