Ours came with a free trial of McAfee anti-virus, but once that runs out, you don't need to purchase any software. You can download Malware Bytes-Free, SuperAntiSpyware, Avast Free Antivirus, Advanced Systemcare, and Windows Cleanup, all for free and these will protect your computer just fine.

Not 100% positive, but I think you get a year before having to pay to renew your subscription. We prefer Norton Security. We use it to do virus scans right before we use its Backup feature. Besides good security, it's easy and intuitive to use. It allows us to put Norton on 10 computers, so we have it on the laptops/desktops of everyone in the family.
