Your phone is actually what the whole "VR" so to say. I think once you remove your phone it shuts off. Generally nothing happens until the phone is plugged in.

When on a planet map or the galaxy map, you can safely disconnect your phone from the headset and pull the tray out to retrieve your phone. You can close the application in your multi-task / running application view. All the game progression will be saved and the headset will turn off.
