Make sure you update the Thnkpad firmware and software all the time because updated firmware makes a big difference in terms of the unit dealing with heat and performance. Firmware makes the single biggest difference in terms of performance and solving heat and performance issues. Use the Lenovo Think pad Companion software to update all the firmware and drivers.

It will generate heat whenever it is turned on, even at idle, this is normal. There will be heat generated while the device is charging as well, this too is normal.
