Almost all laptops have air intake vents on the bottom. If it can't "breathe" then yes, it will get hot and that will shorten the life of both the laptop and the battery. Always use laptops on a hard, smooth surface. Never on a bed or pillow. They make "laptop desks" that fit in your lap or just use a tray of some sort.

You can use Lenovo Q-Control to manually control fan and system performance: ( Fn + Q ) option to change the fan by undervolting the processor.
