17 3/4" is the MAXIMUM height, which is in the middle of the microwave, not the front. The front is only 17" high, and that seems more like 16.25" as the vent tilts back. On the mounting backplate, it's only a smidge over 16" high. Basically, it's not 17 3/4" high on the back or the front, only the midway back. The mounting and visual dimensions are less. Those saying they measured the front to be 17 3/4" are incorrect or didn't actually measure. See picture.
