“If the controls are on top, how do you know when the cycle is finished? Is there a light on the front?”

Yes, there are 3 tiny lights in front which display cycle status.

Yes. There are 3 lights on front that light up for the various stages. When the 3rd light comes on,machine is done. Even though the controls are on the top, I also have enough space to be able to read the word END that appears on top when machine is finished.

This machine does have indicator lights on the front of the door just above the handle.
