“I'm using a dell laptop that doesn't have any hdmi inputs. I bought a vga to hdmi cable adapter but nothing pulls up on the monitor. The computer shows a 2nd screen but the monitor is black. A vga to hdmi cable should work shouldn't it?”

You need to be connecting to the outputs on you laptop. If you don’t have an output you may be screwed
