“I have a Panasonic TV that I got about 10 years ago and works fine. It also has both an optical connection as well as HDMI slot. My question is I don't know if it's actually considered a "smart TV" and would like to know if that may be a problem.”

As long as the optical input is good then there is no issues the hdmi though wont wirk as I dont think its the currect hdmi format. Smart or non smart tv is irrelevant as it is going through audio.
