There are Many settings, within the settings, so you can play around with many different settings, but to answer your question on BRIGHTNESS vs. DARKNESS, you must first TURN OFF the (Energy Saving) mode, this takes down the brightness to save energy, to get to this (click) on ALL SETTINGS, then on PICTURE, over to the right of PICTURE you will see a list of settings, look for ENERGY SAVING in the list and turn it OFF it is set to ON by default. You also need to go into PICTURE MODE and change from APS (Auto Power Save), to STANDARD or you can use VIVID or the other choices, choose what you like best, Personally I think STANDARD works the best for all coloring & brightness, but its your choice, just don't use the APS (Auto Power Save), which is the default of the tv also, because again it is an energy saving mode. Once you do these two steps, you will be able to set your colors, tint & brightness, sharpeness, etc. to your liking, there are also many, many other picture settings, within each setting, you just have to click on each one to see what it does. Hope this helps.
On the remote there's a setting's button. That takes you to different "mode" such as Cinema, Standard, Sports, Game and etc. I played around with that and the Standard Mode seems to work for me. I hope this helps. Other than this, i don't see what other factors could be affecting the TV being dark for you. Also consider the lighting in your room. It's usually different than that of the store's.
Turn OFF (Energy Saver) in PICTURE, also go to PICTURE MODE and change it from APS (Auto Power Saver) to STANDARD or VIVID or one of the other settings that are to your liking. These are both on default so they need to be changed, you then can also adjust the BRIGHTNESS, SHARPNESS, CONTRAST, COLOR, TINT, etc. Hope this helps.
It's probably on "Energy Saving" mode. That happened to my wife and me too. Just hit the Settings button on the remote (should be a gear icon i think), or you can shake the remote so that the cursor appears and click the gear icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Anyway, in the settings there's a tab that controls the "Picture" mode and you can switch between different options like "Vivid, Cinema, Game, Standard, Energy Saving..." etc. When I did that it made the screen brighter. I think you can go even deeper into the settings and manually adjust the brightness if you want as well. That will show up on the left side of the screen. My favorite setting is Vivid.
I picked up the LG j7700 65" with HDR. The blacks were gray, it had an odd banding at default settings of 50% brightness--so the review sites suggested dropping it to 30%. The blacks were better, but then it was too dark. I spent hours trying to adjust it, then I actually returned it for the Sony 850e--looked EXACTLY like the store. Bright, dark blacks--massive difference. Photos below.
