Manually, unless your drain attachment point is as low as the drain port on the backside of unit. I bought 3 and run 2 on dehumidify. I also bought plastic tubs and units sit in these with drain left open. Have noticed small amount of water in tub bottom, but it is inconsequential. I did not want to drill a hole through brick for an outside drain and would forget about the little reservoirs that accompany the unit(s).
