“I am looking for an external cd player to play in my 2018 Mazda cx-5. The manual states it is not compatible with the 3.0, but since this is 2.0, I am hoping it works? It would connect by usb. Any info you can offer on this product?”

This disc drive is not designed for use in a car. It is designed for use with a computer or TV. ^CP
