“I'm a highly sensitive person so noise bothers me, even/ especially white noise. I live in a studio apartment and the fridge will be about 16 feet away from my ears :) Is the noise from the fridge loud enough to hear from that distance?”

The decibel (abbreviated dB) is the unit used to measure the intensity of a sound, and the decibel scale is a little odd because the human ear is incredibly sensitive. Your ears can hear everything from your fingertip brushing lightly over your skin to a loud jet engine. Near total silence is rated at 0 dB (Threshold of human hearing), a whisper at 15 dB and normal conversation at 60 dB. Distance plays a big factor in the perception of loudness, and as you know from your own experience that distance affects the intensity of sound -- if you are far away, the power is greatly diminished. All of the ratings above are taken while standing near the sound. The loudness of a sound is more of a subjective response that will vary with a number of factors. The same sound will not be perceived to have the same loudness to all individuals. Age is one factor that affects the human ear's response to a sound. Quite obviously, grandparents do not hear like they used to. The same intensity sound would not be perceived to have the same loudness to them as it would to you. A quiet Library is rated at 40 dB and at 41 dB, the refrigerator will be as quiet, so depending on your sensitivity, you may or may not be able to hear it from 16 feet away...^IFV
