Does it come with nodes or is it a standalone unit? null

Stand alone unit. No nodes, sold separately Nodes needed for big spaces or confined areas

Nodes are available if you need them, but I did not. It was much more powerful than my old Netgear and I can get a strong signal from any part of my home. I would try it as a standalone and if you find a weak or dead area, then add a node. Very easy to do.
