Marsma, this device does not need you home wifi because it has a builtin wireless connected via satellite from the provider called " great call". You can take this small device with you any where you go and the provider knows where you are because it is also have GPS and it is water proof as well. I bought this for my mother because she have a tendency of falling and slipping. The service that I choose is the best one because it has fall detection for inside your home and for outside your home. And the most important thing that you and your wife must have, and must really have a cellular phones even the basic service. Because without wifi connections you need to call or speak to someone in case of emergency or in case of urgency. You and our wife can get a better deal if you have AARP, please have someone in your family to help you to call AARP , they have a lot of things to offer you and to your wife any things that you need and you will be vey surprised.
