Yes it is protected on all sides. The keyboard acts as a cover for the front of the iPad. You can also disconnect the keyboard and switch it around and snap it to the back..see last photo to see what I mean.

The keyboard acts as a cover and provide front back and side protection while closed. With the keyboard detached it protects everything except the screen but it does have a raised edge so you can lay the iPad screen down on a table or similar and it wont get scratched
