“All I need this remote to do is turn on my Vizio tv, Sanyo soundbar, and Sanyo DVD player, hopefully with one touch of a button, but am curious if I need to buy a receiver or hub of some kind to get it to communicate to all of my devices?”

The Harmony 665 is perfect for your application. Just attach the Harmony to your PC via the USB cable, download the commands for all of your devices and then set up an "Activity" This will program all of the necessary devices to do what you want and assign that series of commands to a single button (one of the red buttons at the top of the remote which have various icons such as a TV, Music, Movie) Then all you have to do is press that button and every command you need will be sent to the various devices. You don't need any additional equipment (other than the Harmony 665) to accomplish this.
