You will program it for each combination of functions that you want to perform. For instance, to "watch tv" you would program in your cable box, tv set to the input for cable and your sound system. If your cable box is also your dvr the buttons on the control i.e. play/pause, stop, ff, etc. will work the cable box. If you have a separate dvr (tivo, etc), then you will add it into the queue. You program it online. It takes some fiddling and it doesn't work flawlessly. But you should be able to come up with a configuration that works for you. I still have to use some of my other controls, particularly if it gets confused, which happens sometimes. Don't forget they are going to stop selling these but will still support them.
