You should only need 1 if you use the unifying receiver OR if your computer has bluetooth you can utilize that and it will not use any usb ports.

The MK850 comes with one of our Logitech Unifying receivers, so you'll only need the one USB port to connect both the mouse and keyboard. Both the mouse and keyboard in the MK850 are also Bluetooth, so if you PC has Bluetooth you can also connect that way without having to use any USB ports.
