“Does the keyboard have to be attached to the iPad to work or can the iPad be in a stand and the keyboard be on your lap or table not connected and still work?”

It needs to be connected directly to the iPad.

It must be connected via the smart connector on the side of the ipad(three spots along the left edge). Unfortunately not Bluetooth.
