Hello, No, the internet is only needed if you wanted to view the system from your phone or computer when you are not at the installed location - however, the system will continue to record normally without an internet connection. You can view the video that was recorded while you were not there, when you are onsite with a standard PC monitor connected onto the DVR unit. Thanks, Lorex
