“What are the advantages of having a NVR system with Cat cables versus a DVR system with BNC cables? I'm getting ready to upgrade an old DVR system but don't know if I should stick with the DVR or go with the NVR. Running new cables is not an issue.”

BNC DVR systems support HD. The main difference and benefit to having NVR is that it can work off your wifi network allowing you to connect other supported devices ie doorbell, wireless cameras. Where a DVR cannot.
