Thats hard to answer b/c for several reasons. One is the back of your TV and where the attachment points are on the TV. The metal attaching frames may be too long for a 42. I think The only way to really know is to buy the mount and test it out before the return date. The other issue is the larger mount is designed for a heavier TV and may not be able to adjust down the tension. I put a 65" on it and i practically had to remove most of the tension so my TV would stay in the full down position. I emailed the company and they responded with an answer in a couple days. good luck
