“The vertical dimension of the mount is 25.3". Our available vertical joist space is 21" plus air space on the lower edge. Can the mount be satisfactorily fastened onto 21" or do we need to add wood to the wall to be used for fastening the mount? Thank you”

Just installed 1 of 2 of these mounts I purchased last week, this was for a classroom. I was easily able to hit 3 studs with 16" centers with the wall plate. I ended up only using the 4 wood bolts provided. I would certainly say that you will fine in your situation that wall plate is about 50"-52" wide (without measuring)
