“Removed dispenser from washer, lifted off the the top tray, and I see on the left side where detergent goes a small divider that is not shown in the manual (see picture). Is it needed?”

Yes it's needed, I made the mistake of removing it myself, it helps with keeping the flow of the detergent enter slowly so as not to add too much, without it you could add a whole bottle of detergent and and over soap your clothes, Ask me how I know......
