An impeller looks like a small bump with ridges or vanes at the bottom of the wash tub. It is designed to create turbulence by rotating while the wash drum moves as well. This wash system will take longer to wash, is typically gentler on clothes and allows more clothes to be washed at one time. An impeller is not the same as an agitator. An agitator vigorously twists and turns to move the wash load. It will remove dirt quickly but is also quite rough on clothes. Top load washers with impellers will also be more energy efficient than models with a traditional agitator. We appreciate your interest in Maytag appliances! Thank you.
