First of all you can just buy it and not pay for it every year, or go to a Google Chromebook and use google docs.

As a student, I have tried the Office Suite that costs anywhere from $150 to $499. There are no upgrades. If Microsoft comes out with a new version, you have to pay the $150 to $499 all over again. It was a lot easier for me to pay the $69.99 renewal every year as it also includes any updates that Microsoft comes out with. Hope that helps

If you purchase I believe the Student Home and Office if I am saying the title right.The price is $149.99 for a non expiring subscription.This is subjected to only 1 PC, tablet ,etc. This meaning you will have to use that same computer to access your subscription.Hope this helps and makes sense.

Go with Shareware. There are a few different, independent, programs you can find online that are safe to use and won't gouge your finances for it. I'm dropping Microsoft and going Shareware after my subscription runs out in a few months.
