I myself just went through this. The warranty will cover the cost of a refurbished replacement controller, no matter what you paid or the current cost. At that time, they did offer me the opportunity to purchase a "new" controller, but that would of cost me the differnece between the two items. Still not a bad deal overall.

If there's an issue, they essentially "junk out" the controller and give you back what you paid (minus what you paid for the Geek Squad protection. Sometimes they'll give it back in store credit, other times they just apply it to a new controller. In other words, if you pay $120 + $10 for protection, if it breaks, they'll apply $120 towards a new controller. The credit also includes the tax you paid too!
