It does not come with WORD you have to purchase separate. Which I did. There is an option for 365 which is good for 1 year or the regular which just becomes outdated once a new version comes out.

As far as good for college, if you have classes all day or will be using this extensively without access to an outlet, I'd not recommend it as the battery life is poor. You need a product that has long battery life or can charge via USB and this is not it. If you only have 1 or 2 classes a day, then yes, it would be fine.
