Thank you for your questions. Unfortunately, disc-based Xbox games are not compatible with Xbox Series S. If you have a library of games on disc, we recommend Xbox Series X instead. Your son's external hard drive will work with Xbox Series S, however any Xbox games that are enhanced to take advantage of this console's new features must be installed on its internal SSD. Otherwise, connecting an external hard drive is a great way to store games and play older games that haven't been enhanced for Xbox Series X/S.
