“I purchased this case for my new iPad. Are you supposed to remove the area covering the up and down buttons on the side, top right? I can't press them in at all. There is no mention of it anywhere. They are not flexible.”

No, don't take that off. What I noticed when I got it, and had the same problem: make sure the corners of the cover are pulled up all the way - it took me a few minutes to get it set in there just right.
