No, this external battery does not affect the sides or the front of the phone. It has rounded edges for holding comfort but attaches directly to the back using the MotoMod attachment system. I am not aware of a case that works with the phone with the battery attached but I don't think it's necessary. I have dropped my phone countless times on sidewalks, cobblestones, carpet, asphalt, you name it. No damage to the phone or the battery except for a minor scuff on the edge. Sometimes the MotoMod battery will pop off but it attaches magnetically so just reconnects right back on.
